Eleanor Ruth Gunthorpe

Eleanor Gunthorpe, age 97, of Tampa, FL passed away in her home on Wednesday May 5, 2021. She was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to James and Ruth Parker (both deceased) . Eleanor grew up outside of Ottawa, Ontario and moved to Prescott, Ontario after completing High School. For the remainder of WW2 she worked at Dominion Lighthouse Depot where depth charges were manufactured for the war effort. She started nursing training at Brockville General Hospital, graduating in 1948 with highest honors. Eleanor worked as a floor charge nurse and in specialty areas of emergency care, surgery, obstetrics, industrial, and geriatrics before taking on private duty assignments prior to her retirement in 1988. Eleanor also resided in Winter Haven, FL, Syracuse, NY, Greenbelt and Hagerstown, Maryland, Buffalo, New York, and Juno Beach, Florida before settling in Tampa. Eleanor married her one true love, Paul Edward Gunthorpe, (now deceased) in 1955 and raised three children ,son, Paul James Gunthorpe of Tampa, daughter Susan Archer of Greensboro, NC, and daughter, Kathy Cozatt of Tampa. She is also survived by son-in-law,Larry Archer of Greensboro, NC, brother-in-law,.Peter Gunthorpe, sister-in-law, Mikie Gunthorpe, and sister-in-law, Nancy Morgan of Fort Myers, FL. Eleanor was pre-deceased by her eldest sister, Dorcas Pinch, and is survived by her sister Jean Dawson, of Brockville, Ontario, and sister Sandra Rouse and brother-in-law Walter Rouse of Ottawa, Ontario. Her niece, and god daughter, Karen Marvel of Brockville,Ontario survives as well as her nephews Bryan Dawson, James Rouse and Brent Rouse of Ottawa, Ontario. Eleanor took special joy in the role of grandmother to Laura Archer, R.N. and Katherine Miller of Greensboro, NC. In 2020 Eleanor became a great-grandmother with the arrival of Sophia Grace Miller. She was a member of Oceanview United Methodist Church in Juno Beach and Lake Magdalene United Methodist Church in Tampa. Eleanor was active in the United Methodist Women and Mary Martha Circle. She participated in the reading programs, and efforts to raise support for children, the homeless, and various ministries around the world. Loved by all who knew her, she will always hold a very special place in our hearts. Her family would like to thank the following healthcare providers that gave Eleanor many quality years of life: Dr. Carol Hodges Dr. Laura Cruse Dr. Arlene Lobo Additionally, many thanks to both LifePath Hospice and Seasons Hospice for their services during the last 2 years of her life. A memorial service will be held on Saturday May 22, 2021 at 11am at Lake Magdalene United Methodist Church, 2902 West Fletcher Avenue, Tampa, FL 33618 The service will also be available online, details to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Eleanor's name can be made to Lake Magdalene United Methodist Church earmarked for the Cuba or Thailand missions. Donations can also be made in her name to the United Methodist Children's home in Enterprise, FL.
